Yellow Fever Vaccine in India: Our Step-by-Step Guide (Bengaluru, 2026)
Six days in airport quarantine. That's what can happen if you fly back to India from South America without one small piece of paper.
Before our one-year backpacking trip across South America, the yellow fever vaccine sat at the top of our checklist, and nobody could tell us how it actually worked. So we found out the hard way. Here's everything, in the order you'll need it.
Quick answers
- Who needs it: anyone 9 months or older going to one of 43 countries in Africa and South America (list below)
- Where: government-designated centres only. In Bengaluru, Sir C V Raman General Hospital
- Cost: ₹440, cash only (what we paid)
- When: at least 10 days before you fly, so book 15–20 days ahead
- Time on the day: 2–3 hours
- Boosters: none. One dose lasts a lifetime
Why Indians need the yellow fever vaccine: the 6-day quarantine rule
The biggest reason isn't the country you're visiting. It's coming back home.
India asks every traveller who arrives within 6 days of leaving a yellow fever country to show an original, valid yellow fever certificate. No certificate means you can be quarantined for up to 6 days at the airport. Photocopies, scans and emailed copies are not accepted, so the original paper certificate has to travel with you. (Ministry of Health advisory)
On top of that, some countries ask for the certificate at their own border, and doctors recommend the vaccine for anyone travelling to areas where yellow fever is present.
What is yellow fever, and how does the vaccine work?
Yellow fever is a virus spread by day-biting mosquitoes in tropical Africa and South America. It's named after the yellow skin and eyes it can cause, and severe cases attack the liver and kidneys.
The good news? One cheap, safe shot protects you for life.
- One dose is enough for life. You don't need a booster.
- The certificate becomes valid 10 days after your shot. Your body needs that long to build immunity, and India counts the certificate as valid only from day 10.
- Plan ahead: get vaccinated at least 10 days before you fly, and book a few weeks earlier than that.
Which countries need a yellow fever vaccine?
If you're 9 months or older and travelling to any of these 43 countries, get vaccinated before you go. This is the list we followed for our trip. Lists like this change, so always check the latest version from the Ministry of Health before you travel.
| Region | Countries |
|---|---|
| Africa (30) | Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Togo, Uganda |
| The Americas (13) | Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela |
Planning a South America trip like ours? Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador are all on this list, so you will almost certainly need it.
Where to get the yellow fever vaccine in India
You can't get this vaccine at a regular clinic. Only certificates from government-designated centres are valid, so use the official list:
Find your nearest centre on the Ministry of Health list of Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres →The list gives each centre's address, vaccination days, timings and phone number. You'll need your passport and an appointment. If you walk in without one, you'll wait until everyone with a booking is done, and you may not get your turn that day.

Before you go: our checklist
- Book 15–20 days before you fly. The shot has to be at least 10 days before departure for the certificate to be valid, and slots fill up.
- Original passport. No photocopies.
- A pen to fill in the form.
- Exact cash. We paid ₹435 for the vaccine plus ₹5 for the OPD consultation, so ₹440 in total. Cash was the only payment accepted, and they had no change for big notes.
- Arrive by 8:30 am, even though vaccinations start later. It's first come, first served once you're in the queue.
- Eat a good breakfast. You'll be there 2–3 hours, including a 30-minute wait after the shot.
The fee is what we paid, so check with the centre in case it has changed.
On the day: what happens, step by step
Here's exactly how our morning went in Bengaluru.
- Fill in the form. When you arrive, you'll get a form asking for your passport details and any existing illnesses or allergies. Hold on to it, because the number on it is your place in the queue.
- Pay at the counter. You're called by your form number. Pay the exact amount in cash.
- See the doctor. A doctor checks your form and asks a few questions, for example if you're pregnant or need extra monitoring.
- Get the shot. It takes a few seconds.
- Wait 30 minutes. You stay for observation, just in case of a reaction.
- Collect your certificate. You get a printed certificate after the waiting time. This original is what you show at airports, so keep it safe. We also scanned it and saved a copy on our phones as a backup.
The whole process took us about 2–3 hours.
After the vaccine
You might feel slightly feverish or tired for a day or two, so keep the rest of your day light. Don't book anything important straight after.
Then pack the original certificate with your passport. You'll need it when you fly back into India.
Who should check with a doctor first
The vaccine isn't right for everyone. Talk to the doctor at the centre, or your own doctor, before getting it if you are:
- travelling with a baby under 9 months
- pregnant or breastfeeding
- living with a weakened immune system, or on medicines that affect it
- severely allergic to eggs
- over 60
One thing to know: in India, a medical exemption from the vaccine does not exempt you from quarantine on arrival. (Ministry of Health advisory)
